Has MTN taken over Telkom?

This is the question I have been asking myself for the past two or three weeks. And I still haven’t found any answer or atleast for now.

But maybe a talk between the two could result in MTN buying Telkom's fixed-line.

Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) – is the second large cell phone operator in South Africa. According to the company’s Annual report 2006 there were about 2 483 000 subscribers in South Africa as compared to its successful competitor - Vodacom.

About 17.2 million Vodacom subscribers were recorded in June 30 2005 according to I-Net Bridge and iafrica.com.

Telkom SA’s fifty 50% stake is owned by Vodacom and the other 50% by Vodaphone Group according to Vodacom web site.

This question came as a result that when making a phonecall from North West University, Mafikeng campus – a receiver would notice a 083 numbers which are known to be MTN numbers.

It is, however, not clear whether MTN will end up buying Telkom’s fixed-line as talk between the two is still underway.
